Pakistan's Economy: Record Growth in New Businesses and Trade Challenges

The fiscal year 2025-26 has brought mixed results for Pakistan's economy. While on one hand, a rapid trend in starting new businesses has been observed in the country, on the other hand, some major challenges have also emerged in the trade sector. The government and the private sector are taking various measures to resolve these issues.

According to a report by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), a record 43,559 new companies were registered in the country this year. This is a 24 percent increase compared to the previous year. Following this surge, the total number of registered companies in Pakistan has exceeded 300,000, which is being considered a major milestone for the development of the country's corporate sector.

However, the situation on the trade front is somewhat different. Pakistan's trade deficit has reached $39.5 billion, the highest in the last four years. Additionally, the annual export target could not be met, falling short by approximately $4.87 billion. Economic experts suggest that immediate reforms are needed in the export sector to support the national economy.

There are also some positive indicators for economic improvement. New projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC 2.0) are expected to improve manufacturing and exports. Furthermore, a Chinese company has offered a major investment in Pakistan's energy and oil sectors. The first-ever 'Investment and Trade Expo' is also being organized in Balochistan this month to promote investment in the province.

New opportunities are also emerging for Pakistan at the international level. The head of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will soon visit Pakistan to enhance cooperation in maritime trade. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan has announced special tax concessions for Pakistani investors to conduct business there. It is hoped that all these measures will bring stability to Pakistan's economy in the future.
