Food Security and Economy in Pakistan: Challenges and Positive Progress

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the inflation rate decreased slightly in June. The rate now stands at 11.1 percent, down from 11.7 percent last month. This decline is primarily attributed to a drop in electricity and food prices. While this news brings relief to ordinary citizens, experts remain concerned about food security in the country.

While the monsoon season in Pakistan brings rain, it also poses risks to agriculture. The government has warned that heavy rains, floods, and landslides could damage crops, raising fears of food shortages in the country. Pakistan's agricultural system is under constant pressure due to climate change and heatwaves, necessitating emergency measures.

Despite these challenges, Pakistan is striving to enhance international cooperation. Recently, Pakistan and Turkey committed to increasing collaboration in food security and sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, Pakistan has become a permanent member of the International Olive Council for the first time. This membership will promote olive production in Pakistan and help reduce reliance on edible oil imports.

On the other hand, protests have broken out in parts of Azad Kashmir, such as Rawalakot, against food supply issues and restrictions. Protesters have demanded that the government remove obstacles to food distribution and control prices. According to a recent World Bank report, if Pakistan invests effectively in the agricultural sector, millions of new jobs could be created by 2050.

Overall, to ensure food security, Pakistan must combat climate change while maintaining economic stability. Although the decrease in inflation and international agreements are positive indicators, ensuring the accessibility of affordable and quality food for the common man remains a major challenge for the government.
