Government decides to audit DISCOs to curb electricity theft
The Government of Pakistan has decided to conduct a comprehensive audit of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) across the country. The primary objective of this initiative is to identify the root causes of electricity theft, technical losses, and commercial deficits. According to government officials, the ongoing losses in the power sector are becoming a burden on the national economy, and reducing them is inevitable.
During the audit, all locations where electricity is being stolen or where power is being wasted due to outdated technology will be identified. Experts state that faults in transmission lines and tampering with meters are major causes of electricity losses. The government is considering improving modern technology and monitoring systems to address these issues.
Under this plan, the performance of electricity distribution companies will also be evaluated. If administrative negligence is found in any company, strict action will be taken against it. The government's goal is to reduce electricity losses to provide relief to consumers in their bills and to make the energy sector self-reliant.
This decision comes at a time when the public is facing severe difficulties due to the increase in electricity prices in the country. A government spokesperson stated that the audit process will be transparent and future policies will be formulated in light of the report generated from it. The public hopes that this initiative will lead to improvements in the power supply system and a reduction in unannounced load shedding.
