US Court Ruling: Ban on Buying Sweets with Food Stamps Overturned
A federal judge in the United States has issued a significant ruling, blocking restrictions placed on purchasing sweets and candy through food stamps (SNAP). This decision has ended efforts aimed at limiting food choices for low-income families.
Some U.S. states had demanded that individuals using food stamps be prevented from purchasing sugary drinks and unhealthy items. Their stance was that this would improve public health. However, the judge ruled that the U.S. Department of Agriculture does not have the legal authority to approve such restrictions.
In its explanation, the court stated that current federal laws do not allow states to change purchasing rules at their own discretion. According to the judge, until the country's parliament, namely Congress, makes a clear change in the law, no state can be granted the right to restrict citizens' choices.
This decision will directly impact millions of people who benefit from the 'SNAP' program. This program provides financial assistance to low-income families to purchase groceries. Now, these individuals will be able to buy items according to their needs and preferences as before, including sugary drinks.
Although health experts often express concern over the consumption of high-sugar items, legal experts view this decision as significant regarding the setting of limits on government authority. Currently, it is unclear whether the government will appeal this decision in a higher court.
