Lahore: Food Prices Fail to Decrease Despite Drop in Petrol Prices
The Government of Pakistan recently announced a reduction in the prices of petroleum products, aimed at providing relief to the public. It is generally understood that when fuel becomes cheaper, transport costs decrease, which in turn brings down the prices of food items. However, the opposite situation is being observed in the markets of Lahore.
Prices of vegetables, fruits, and other essential items remain very high in various markets across Lahore. According to reports, the benefit of the reduction in fuel prices has not reached ordinary consumers. Shopkeepers claim that prices in the wholesale market are still high, making them unable to sell goods at lower rates.
Citizens have expressed severe disappointment over this situation. They state that whenever there is even a slight increase in petrol prices, shopkeepers immediately hike the prices of everything. However, when prices decrease, instead of passing the benefit on to the public, profiteers remain busy lining their own pockets. Consequently, it has become difficult for the common man to manage the household budget.
Local administration and price control committees have initiated monitoring and imposing fines in markets, but these measures are not proving very successful in curbing inflation. Economic experts say that until there is a significant reduction in transport fares and better monitoring of the supply chain, the impact of the reduction in fuel prices will not be visible.
In conclusion, it is clear that merely reducing fuel prices is not enough. To protect the citizens of Lahore from inflation, the government needs to make the market pricing system more stringent and transparent. The public is still waiting for the time when daily necessities will be available to them at affordable prices.
