Pakistan will thwart Indian attempts to use water as a weapon: Attaullah Tarar
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has stated that Pakistan will never allow India to use water as a weapon. He clarified that any violation of the Indus Waters Treaty will not be accepted under any circumstances and that Pakistan will take every possible measure to protect its water rights.
This statement from the government spokesperson comes at a time when reports are circulating regarding India affecting the flow of river waters. Pakistan's stance is that India is bound to adhere to international agreements and that the unfair use of water could lead to regional tensions.
The issue of water distribution between Pakistan and India is decades old, which was resolved in the form of the Indus Waters Treaty signed in 1960. Under this treaty, there is a clear system for the distribution of river waters between the two countries, which is monitored by the World Bank.
The Information Minister further added that Pakistan will not compromise on ensuring water supply for its agricultural and economic interests. The government is committed to raising this issue at the international level as well, in order to compel India to abide by the treaty.
For Pakistan, the availability of water serves as the backbone not only for agriculture but also for the national economy. Officials state that Pakistan's position on this sensitive matter is based on principle and that it will continue to pursue diplomatic and legal avenues to protect its water resources.
