Today's News: National dialogue amid intense protests and blockades
Panama is experiencing a critical day with the start of a national dialogue to halt the protests that have paralyzed various areas of the country. While the Government seeks consensus through Church mediation, clashes in the capital and road closures continue to affect transportation to the interior.
This Thursday, July 14, at 3:00 p.m., the National Government will set up a dialogue table at the City of Knowledge (an academic and business complex in the capital) with organized groups and social movements. The Catholic Church will act as a mediator in this meeting, which follows a call from the United Nations in Panama to find effective solutions to restore calm in the country.
On the streets, the situation remains tense. At Plaza 5 de Mayo, clashes were recorded between anti-riot units and protesters, where tear gas was used and arrests were made. Additionally, transportation to the interior from the Albrook Terminal remains paralyzed on routes ranging from Chame to Chiriquí due to constant road blockades.
To mitigate the economic impact, the Government Innovation Authority (AIG) provided details regarding the registration for "Solidarity Fuel." Citizens interested in this benefit must log on to the official platform and complete a registration form to access state support for fuel prices.
In the judicial field, various journalism associations have requested that the hearing for the Odebrecht case—a legal proceeding regarding an international bribery network—be public. The National Journalism Council and other organizations demand transparency and true accountability to the public.
