Panama seeks dialogue amid protests while sports and justice remain active
The Government of Panama has officially convened a national dialogue table for this Thursday at the City of Knowledge. The Catholic Church will act as a mediator in this meeting, which seeks to bring together organized groups and social movements to find solutions to the current crisis. This initiative arises shortly after the United Nations in Panama urged the Government to seek consensus and effective actions to restore calm in the country in the face of intensifying strikes.
However, the situation on the streets continues to be difficult. In Plaza 5 de Mayo, heavy clashes were recorded between riot units and groups of protesters. During the day, authorities used tear gas and several arrests were reported, reflecting the increase in social tension in the capital city.
These protests have caused a significant paralysis in national transportation. Routes connecting Chame with the province of Chiriquí remain halted due to road closures at various points across the country. This situation has seriously affected the Albrook Transport Terminal, where the vast majority of trips to the interior of the country have had to be suspended.
As a measure to alleviate the economic situation, the administrator of the Government Innovation Authority, Luis Oliva, explained the details for citizens to register on the "Combustible Solidario" (Solidarity Fuel) platform. On the other hand, regarding justice matters, various journalistic unions have formally requested that the Odebrecht case hearing be public, in order to guarantee transparency and accountability to the citizenry.
In the international arena, the young Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who holds the world's best mark of the year in high jump, made strong statements in Oregon. Mahuchikh labeled the representatives of Russia as "killers," showing how the war in her country continues to affect the world of professional sports and the opinions of its protagonists.
Finally, in sports news, Latin American baseball players Eugenio Suárez and José Miranda stood out with a great offensive performance in their respective Major League triumphs. In soccer, it was revealed that national team player Rosario Vargas practiced ballet before starting her sports career. Additionally, Panamanian forward Rolando "El Toro" Blackburn is already in Costa Rica training with his new team, Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.
