Tension at Plaza 5 de Mayo: Clashes Between Protesters and Police
This Wednesday afternoon, Plaza 5 de Mayo became the scene of violent clashes between groups of protesters and police anti-riot units. The situation in the city center quickly turned tense as authorities attempted to control the protest taking place in the area.
During the demonstration, security agents used tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd occupying the plaza. For their part, some groups of protesters responded by throwing objects and fireworks, known locally as "bombitas," which increased the chaos and noise in the urban area.
As a result of these incidents, authorities reported the arrest of several people involved in the disturbances. The clashes significantly affected vehicular traffic and forced many nearby businesses to close their doors early to protect their employees and customers.
Many citizens passing through the area were affected by the effects of the tear gas, having to seek refuge in nearby buildings. Emergency services were present to treat people experiencing respiratory difficulties or minor injuries due to the confusion generated.
These events occur in a context of growing social discontent, where protests have increased in frequency over the last few days. Although calm returned to the plaza as night fell, organizing groups have suggested that the mobilizations could continue in the coming days if an agreement is not reached with the authorities.
