Today's News: National Dialogue and Registration for Solidarity Fuel
Panama begins a key national dialogue today to stop the wave of protests affecting the country. While clashes are reported in the capital and transportation to the interior remains paralyzed, the government has enabled registration for the fuel subsidy, and civil guilds demand transparency in high-profile judicial processes.
The National Government called for a dialogue table this Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at the City of Knowledge (a campus housing international and academic organizations) with the Catholic Church as mediator. This measure seeks to resolve the social crisis that has paralyzed transport routes from the Albrook Terminal to the interior, affecting routes from Chame to Chiriquí. The urgency of the dialogue increases after Wednesday's disturbances at Plaza 5 de Mayo, where police used tear gas against protesters, resulting in several arrests. Given the situation, the United Nations urged the government to seek urgent consensus to restore social peace.
In response to the cost of living, the Government Innovation Authority (AIG) detailed the process to access "Solidarity Fuel." Luis Oliva, the entity's administrator, explained that citizens must complete a registration form on the official government platform. This program seeks to alleviate drivers' expenses through a subsidized price at service stations, one of the main demands of the recent mobilizations.
Regarding justice and transparency, various journalism guilds, including the National Journalism Council, have formally requested that the Odebrecht case hearing be public. The objective is to allow citizens to closely follow the legal process related to the bribes paid by the Brazilian construction company in Panama, ensuring clear accountability from the judicial authorities.
