Tension in Panama: Clashes and Detentions at Plaza 5 de Mayo
This Wednesday afternoon, Plaza 5 de Mayo became the scene of violent clashes between groups of protesters and police riot units. The situation generated moments of great tension in this central area, where the presence of citizens is constant.
During the day, security agents used tear gas to try to disperse the crowd that was at the site. For their part, some groups of protesters responded by throwing objects and loud devices, which increased the confusion and chaos in the area.
As a result of these disturbances, authorities confirmed the detention of several people participating in the protests. Additionally, traffic on nearby streets was seriously affected, forcing many drivers and pedestrians to seek alternative routes to avoid the conflict and the effects of the gas.
These demonstrations occur in a context of growing social discontent that has been increasing over the last few days. Although calm partially returned by late afternoon, police surveillance continues around the plaza to prevent new incidents and ensure the safety of citizens passing through the area.
