Heavy clashes between protesters and police at Plaza 5 de Mayo
This Wednesday, Plaza 5 de Mayo in Panama City became the center of heavy protests. Groups of protesters and crowd control units clashed for several hours during an afternoon marked by tension and conflict.
During the riots, riot police used tear gas to try to disperse the crowd occupying the area. For their part, some sectors of the demonstration responded by throwing fireworks known as "bombitas" and other objects toward the police lines.
As a result of these incidents, authorities reported the arrest of several people involved in the clashes. The atmosphere in the plaza was very difficult for citizens passing through the area due to the large amount of smoke and the constant noise of detonations.
The situation in the city center remains unstable, as the number of people joining the demonstrations has been increasing in recent days. Local authorities have asked the population to remain calm while they attempt to restore public order on the main streets.
