Road closures, fuel subsidy & more today
Panama faces a day of transport paralysis toward the interior and high tensions in the capital. While the government attempts to calm protests with a new fuel subsidy and a dialogue table, road closures continue to affect mobility across the country.
Registration is now open to receive the "Solidarity Fuel" benefit, an economic aid to reduce the cost of gasoline. Luis Oliva, director of the Government Innovation Authority (AIG), explained that citizens must complete a form on the institution's official platform to access this state support.
Avoid traveling to the interior of the country, as most routes from the Albrook Terminal (the main national transport hub) are suspended. Road closures have paralyzed routes from Chame to Chiriquí. Additionally, caution is recommended at Plaza 5 de Mayo in the capital, where clashes involving tear gas and arrests were recorded during the latest protests.
Today at 3:00 p.m., a dialogue table will be established at the City of Knowledge (an administrative and academic center in the capital) to seek a way out of the crisis. The National Government will meet with organized groups and social movements under the mediation of the Catholic Church, after the United Nations urged authorities to find effective solutions to restore order.
In the legal sphere, journalism guilds demand that the Odebrecht case hearing be public. The National Journalism Council and other organizations are calling for total transparency in this judicial process for corruption to ensure accountability to the public.
