Tension at Plaza 5 de Mayo: Protests end in clashes with police
This Wednesday afternoon, Plaza 5 de Mayo in Panama City was the scene of intense protests. Demonstrators gathered to express their discontent, but the situation became complicated when direct clashes with security forces began.
During the day, groups of protesters and anti-riot units clashed on several occasions. The police used tear gas to try to disperse the crowd, while some sectors of the protest responded by throwing objects and pyrotechnic devices known as "bombitas."
As a result of these incidents, authorities reported the arrest of several people involved in the disturbances. The atmosphere in the square and nearby streets was one of great confusion, which led to the closure of major roads and significantly affected traffic in the city center.
These demonstrations are part of a series of protests that have recently increased in the country. Citizens are demanding answers to various social and economic demands, which has generated a climate of constant tension in different parts of the Panamanian capital.
Finally, the police maintain a strong presence in the area to prevent further acts of violence and ensure public order. Although the situation calmed down by nightfall, social organizations have indicated that they could continue with the mobilizations in the coming days if dialogues with the government are not established.
