Panama seeks dialogue amid intense protests and national crisis
Panama is experiencing moments of great tension due to the demonstrations taking place across the country. To try to resolve the crisis, the National Government has called for a dialogue table this Thursday at the City of Knowledge. The Catholic Church will act as a mediator in this meeting, where authorities and organized social groups are expected to seek joint solutions to restore social peace.
The situation on the streets is complicated and has seriously affected transportation. Most routes to the interior of the country from the Albrook Terminal, including destinations such as Chame and Chiriquí, remain paralyzed due to road closures. Additionally, on Wednesday, heavy clashes were recorded at Plaza 5 de Mayo, where police used tear gas and several people were detained during the protests.
Given the intensification of the strikes, the United Nations in Panama has called on the Government to find consensus and effective actions to help calm the situation. For its part, the authorities have enabled registration for "Solidarity Fuel." Luis Oliva, administrator of the Government Innovation Authority, explained the details so that citizens can access the platform and complete the necessary form to receive this benefit.
In the judicial sphere, transparency is an important demand of society. Various journalism guilds, such as the National Journalism Council, have formally requested that the hearing for the Odebrecht case be public. Journalists believe that accountability is fundamental and that citizens have the right to know the details of this legal process, which is so relevant to the country.
In the world of international sports, current events are also mixed with politics. The young Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who holds the best high jump mark of the year, called Russians "killers" during a competition in Oregon, United States. Meanwhile, in Major League Baseball, Latin American players Eugenio Suárez from Venezuela and José Miranda from Puerto Rico stood out with an excellent offense in their respective teams' victories.
Finally, there is positive news about Panamanian athletes abroad. Forward Rolando "El Toro" Blackburn is already in Costa Rica training with his new team, Liga Deportiva Alajuelense. Likewise, the national team footballer Rosario Vargas shared details of her personal life in an interview, revealing that before shining on the football fields, her passion was ballet.
