Former President Pedro Castillo must correct errors in his presidential pardon request
Former Peruvian leader Pedro Castillo, who is currently in prison, recently submitted a request for a presidential pardon to obtain his freedom or reduce his sentence. However, Peru's Ministry of Justice and Human Rights has reported that this initial request has not been accepted due to errors in the document.
Minister of Justice Luis Jiménez Borra explained to the media that the request was declared "inadmissible" on April 30. This technical decision means that the document presented by Castillo's defense does not meet all the legal requirements necessary to be processed by the competent authorities.
Despite this setback, the minister clarified that the former president still has an opportunity. Castillo's legal team is within the legal deadline to "remedy the observations," which means they can correct the errors or add the missing information so that the process can continue its normal course.
A presidential pardon is a special benefit that the State can grant in specific cases, but it requires a very strict administrative process. For now, the future of this request depends on the speed and precision with which the former leader's lawyers respond to the requirements of the Ministry of Justice.
This case continues to generate great interest in Peruvian politics, as the country watches how the judicial proceedings against the former leader progress. It is expected that in the coming weeks it will be confirmed whether the defense managed to correct the necessary documents for the request to be formally evaluated.
