Today's News: Attacks on Transport and Tight Election Results
The day in Peru is marked by a wave of violence against public transport in Lima and Callao, while the official vote count shows a minimal difference between the presidential candidates. Additionally, the justice system has ordered changes to university meals, and a death in police custody is being investigated.
Citizen insecurity hit the transport sector with two serious attacks. In Chorrillos, a man posing as a passenger murdered the driver of a "combi" (a public transport vehicle) and injured two other people near a school. In Ventanilla, another shooting attack against a vehicle left two injured; the police link this second incident to cases of extortion, a crime where criminals demand money in exchange for not attacking workers.
In the political sphere, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) reported that, with 99.15% of the tally sheets counted, the difference between the candidates is only 36,349 votes. Keiko Fujimori has recorded more than 9.1 million votes in this final stage of the count. On the other hand, former candidate Rafael López Aliaga announced that he will not take office as a senator and called for the dissolution of the ONPE and the National Jury of Elections (JNE), the bodies that oversee the voting, as he considers the system unreliable.
Regarding judicial matters, the Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death of a teenager who died after being detained at the Manchay police station. The minor's relatives claim he was a victim of physical assault by the police, leading the Public Ministry to launch an investigation into alleged homicide.
Finally, the Judiciary ordered the National University of San Marcos to incorporate a free vegan menu in its dining hall. The measure, driven by a group of students, requires the university to offer food options without animal products that meet the necessary nutritional requirements.
