Today's News: Congress changes electoral rules and JNE calls for hearings

The Congress of the Republic has modified the requirements for political parties to maintain their registration ahead of the upcoming 2026 elections. In the judicial and electoral spheres, authorities will review the validity of thousands of polling stations, while an investigation begins into the death of a minor at a police station.

Congress approved changes to the Law on Political Organizations that relax the rules for the 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections. The modification reduces the regional participation requirement necessary for a party to maintain its official registration from 50% to 30%. This measure benefits groups that did not reach the previously required minimum number of candidates, allowing them to avoid the cancellation of their political registration.

On the other hand, the National Jury of Elections (JNE), the autonomous body responsible for ensuring the legality of electoral processes, summoned representatives from the Juntos por el Perú and Fuerza Popular parties. Next Friday, June 19, hearings will be held to review the annulment of 1,751 polling stations in Lima and 647 abroad. In this regard, leader Ernesto Zunini reported that his party is raising funds through collections to cover the costs of legal defense in this process.

Regarding security issues, the National Police confirmed that a teenager died from mechanical asphyxiation by hanging inside the Manchay police station. The Public Ministry, which is the institution responsible for prosecuting crimes, has opened a preliminary investigation for alleged homicide to clarify the circumstances of this death that occurred while in police custody.

On the international scene, the president of Brazil, Lula da Silva, requested that Donald Trump not intervene in his country's elections, while in Bolivia, a dialogue table was established between the government and the Bolivian Workers' Center (COB) to address the situation of detained individuals.
