Secrets of Wawel revealed through space technology
The Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow has become the site of extraordinary scientific research. Experts have begun analyzing the underground areas of Wawel Hill, utilizing advanced technology derived from the space sector.
In the Dragon's Den, one of the castle's most famous tourist attractions, a special detector has been installed. This device allows scientists to precisely "X-ray" the structure of the hill without the need for invasive excavation work that could damage the historical walls.
This technology is based on the use of muons, which are elementary particles reaching Earth from space. Thanks to them, researchers can create a detailed image of the hill's interior, which helps in discovering previously unknown voids or corridors hidden deep underground.
This project combines modern science with the history of Poland. The results of the research may provide new information regarding the architecture of the castle and the methods used to build the royal residence centuries ago.
The work in the Dragon's Den is an example of how innovative technical solutions can support archaeology and the preservation of monuments. Thanks to such efforts, the Polish national heritage is becoming better understood by contemporary researchers.
