President calls for changes to access to firearms in Poland
President Andrzej Duda has issued an appeal regarding the rationalization of regulations governing citizens' access to firearms. This proposal has sparked a broad discussion in the Polish public sphere, becoming one of the most important political topics of recent days.
Representatives of the Law and Justice (PiS) party have officially supported the direction of changes proposed by the head of state. Politicians from this group emphasize that Poles should not be disarmed and that the law should enable citizens to defend themselves more effectively in dangerous situations.
Member of Parliament Przemysław Czarnek has already announced the start of broad public consultations on this matter. They aim to develop solutions that will, on one hand, increase citizens' sense of security and, on the other, ensure appropriate control over gun ownership in the country.
Currently, Polish regulations regarding access to firearms are among the most restrictive in Europe. Each application for a permit is considered individually, and the candidate must meet a number of rigorous requirements, including passing psychological tests and proving a valid reason for owning a weapon.
The debate on changes to the law is only just beginning. Experts predict that the coming months will be a time of intense discussions between politicians, shooting organizations, and representatives of uniformed services in order to develop a compromise model for the regulations.
