Controversy surrounding the name of a Ukrainian military unit
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky named one of his country's military units "Heroes of the UPA." This decision triggered an immediate reaction in Poland. Poland and Ukraine share a common but difficult history, which is why such actions evoke strong emotions on both sides of the border.
Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, announced that he intends to discuss this matter with his Ukrainian counterpart. The Polish minister expressed concern that the decision by the authorities in Kyiv could negatively impact relations between the nations. According to him, such steps may provoke extreme anti-Ukrainian sentiments among Poles.
Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that understanding Polish historical sensitivity is necessary for building good relations in the future. The Polish side regularly points out that the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) is responsible for the tragic events in Volhynia during World War II. For this reason, the legacy of this organization is viewed very critically in Poland.
Karol Nawrocki, president of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), also reacted to the Ukrainian president's decision. The Polish institution has been researching past crimes and providing historical education for years. The reactions of Polish officials show that historical issues remain one of the most difficult topics in diplomacy between Warsaw and Kyiv.
Although Poland is one of Ukraine's closest allies during the ongoing war with Russia, disputes over history continue to resurface. Experts point out that open dialogue and mutual respect for historical memory are key to maintaining good neighborly relations. Both sides will have to seek common ground to avoid further tensions in the future.
