Important scientific project: University of Gdańsk studies the mental health of young mothers
The University of Gdańsk has launched significant research concerning the mental health of women in the postpartum period. The project, titled "Before the Fall: Maternal Mental Health and Suicide in Poland," aims to draw attention to the difficult problem of suicidal thoughts and attempts among young mothers.
Experts emphasize that the period after giving birth is a time of immense emotional burden for many women. Hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and a new social role can lead to serious mental health crises, which are often downplayed by those around them.
Dr. hab. Magdalena Chrzan-Dętkoś, who leads the project, notes that early recognition of warning signs is crucial. The researchers' goal is not only to analyze the phenomenon but also to develop effective support methods for women who find themselves in difficult life situations.
The results of this research could contribute to introducing changes in the Polish healthcare system. Better diagnostics and easier access to professional psychological help are essential to ensure the safety of both mothers and their children.
This project serves as a reminder of how important it is to care for mental well-being at every stage of life. Social education in this area is the first step toward reducing the scale of the problem and building better support for families in Poland.
