Zelensky’s Order Revoked; Pytel Free & More
In today's summary: a diplomatic dispute over Poland's highest decoration, a wrongfully convicted man is released, and the million-zloty earnings of a hospital director. We have also prepared a heatwave warning and a price bargain.
President Karol Nawrocki has revoked the Order of the White Eagle (Poland's highest state decoration) from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, leading to a crisis in relations with Ukraine. The reason for the decision was the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after a figure controversial to Poland. In response, President Zelenskyy returned the medal and cancelled a planned meeting with Nawrocki. Consequently, the Polish president was also not invited to the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, organized by Donald Tusk and the Ukrainian side.
Piotr Pytel has left the Rzeszów Penitentiary after a German court wrongfully sentenced him to life imprisonment for murder. Although the man is now free, his final legal status will be decided by President Karol Nawrocki. For years, Pytel unsuccessfully sought a pardon, and a breakthrough in his case only occurred following a recent intervention by the Ministry of Justice.
Krzysztof Żochowski, director of the hospital in Garwolin and a councilor (a local government representative), may lose his position after it was revealed that he earned over a million zlotys last year. Żochowski combines his role as director with working as a doctor at the same facility. Although he defends his income as the result of hard work during shifts, the case has sparked a discussion on the remuneration rules for public officials.
In connection with the heatwave, experts are warning against leaving children in cars – in France, high temperatures have already led to tragedies and several drownings. To help residents cope with the heat, the Action retail chain has introduced a fan for 69 PLN, which is a significantly lower price than in other stores.
