Poland and the World: Tragic attacks on Ukraine, historical disputes, and new defense technologies
We begin today's news with tragic reports from Ukraine. At least 22 people, including two children, have been killed following a massive Russian attack. Russian missiles and drones struck civilian infrastructure, such as kindergartens and clinics, primarily in Kyiv and other regions of the country. The humanitarian situation remains very difficult.
These attacks are occurring amidst diplomatic tensions between Poland and Ukraine. The cause is President Zelenskyy's decision to name a military unit after the "Heroes of the UPA." Minister Radosław Sikorski expressed disappointment, emphasizing that both nations have different historical sensitivities regarding the events in Volhynia. Behind-the-scenes talks are ongoing, and Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz plans to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart. Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister has already met with a Polish diplomat in Kyiv to discuss the dispute.
President Andrzej Duda also spoke in the context of relations with Ukraine. He addressed the proposal to strip Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest decoration. Duda stated that when he awarded the order in 2023, the political situation was different. The order's chapter is now set to handle the matter following a request from Karol Nawrocki, president of the IPN (Institute of National Remembrance).
Poland is also developing its defense capabilities. Secret work on a new Polish long-range strike drone has just been completed. The device resembles the Iranian Shaheds and is intended for mass production. The project received financial support under the EU's SAFE program, which is intended to strengthen the private defense sector in our country.
Important information is also coming from the prosecutor's office, which has launched an investigation into Israel's actions. This concerns the detention of four Poles who participated in a humanitarian mission to the Gaza Strip as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla last October. Investigators from Gdańsk are examining whether the Israeli military's actions at sea can be considered maritime piracy.
In domestic news, there is talk of a brutal crime in Lublin. A court has temporarily remanded a 47-year-old former soldier of the Territorial Defence Forces (WOT) in custody. The man is suspected of attempted murder with extreme cruelty. According to investigators' findings, he doused his son's friend with gasoline and set him on fire.
Finally, political and social news. PiS MP Marcin Porzucek apologized for his behavior at Warsaw Chopin Airport. The politician admitted he was under the influence of alcohol and strong painkillers, which led to an intervention by emergency services. Meanwhile, in Kraków, a discussion about the city's future is underway. Following the dismissal of the previous mayor in a referendum, readers in an online poll identified Andrzej Duda as an interesting candidate for the new mayor of Kraków.
