ECJ rejects Poland's request regarding the Mercosur agreement
The Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) has made a decision regarding the trade agreement between the European Union and the countries of the Mercosur group, which includes South American nations such as Brazil and Argentina. The judges rejected Poland's request for a temporary suspension of the agreement.
The Polish government argued that the agreement could negatively affect the situation of domestic farmers. According to authorities in Warsaw, opening the European market to cheaper agricultural products from South America poses a threat to the competitiveness of Polish farms, which must meet significantly stricter EU standards.
The ECJ's decision means that the process of implementing the agreement will continue in accordance with Brussels' earlier plans. EU institutions emphasize that trade agreements of this type are crucial for the economic development of the entire Community and for building strong relationships with foreign partners.
This situation is sparking strong emotions within agricultural circles across Poland. Industry representatives fear that increased food imports from abroad will lead to a decline in the purchase prices of agricultural products, which could worsen the financial situation of many family farms.
At this moment, it is unknown what the Polish government's next steps will be regarding this matter. Experts point out that the issue of protecting the local agricultural market will remain one of the most important topics in Poland's relations with the European Union in the coming months.
