Tragic fire in Sanok: 17th-century historic church burns down
Last weekend, a massive loss occurred for Polish cultural heritage. A fire broke out at the Museum of Folk Architecture in Sanok, resulting in the total destruction of a historic wooden church dating back to 1667. This structure was one of the most valuable items in the open-air museum's collection.
Firefighting units arrived at the scene immediately and battled the blaze for many hours. Despite the quick response of the services, the building's structure was made of very dry, old wood, which caused the fire to spread rapidly. However, the firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to other historic buildings located nearby.
Currently, fire safety experts and the police are working on-site, attempting to determine the exact causes of the fire. Museum authorities and local officials have already announced their full cooperation to clarify the circumstances of this incident. At this moment, no theory is being ruled out, including an electrical failure or accidental ignition.
The destroyed church was not only an important point on the tourist map of the Podkarpackie region, but above all, a priceless testament to ancient sacral architecture. Representatives of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage expressed deep regret over the loss of such an important object for Polish history and promised support for the institution in the process of rebuilding or securing the remains of the temple.
