Poland calls on European Commission to penalize Meta
The Polish government has taken official steps regarding online scams appearing on social media platforms. Authorities in Warsaw have submitted a request to the European Commission to impose a heavy financial penalty on Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram.
The reason for this decision is the large number of fake advertisements that regularly appear on the services owned by the American giant. According to Polish authorities, these ads often promote financial scams, using the images of well-known individuals or institutions to extort money from unsuspecting users.
The Polish government is demanding that a fine of 250 million euros be imposed on Meta. According to Polish representatives, the corporation is not taking sufficient action to effectively remove dangerous content and protect its users from cybercriminals.
This case is part of a broader discussion within the European Union regarding internet safety. New regulations, known as the Digital Services Act, impose an obligation on large social media platforms to respond quickly to illegal content.
Currently, the matter is under review by the European Commission. If Poland's request is approved, it could set a significant precedent in the fight against online fraud across the entire European Union.
