Minister of National Defense responds to criticism regarding Russian missile
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz addressed the incident that took place this week in parliament. A Russian missile violated Polish airspace, which sparked a debate regarding the security of the country's borders and the procedures used by the Polish military.
During his address in the Sejm, the minister explained why the missile was not shot down the moment it crossed the border. He emphasized that decisions on the use of combat assets must be made based on a thorough analysis of the situation and the safety of the residents in the areas over which the object is flying.
The minister assured that Polish services monitored the missile's flight path throughout its entire presence in Polish airspace. He added that Polish defense systems were on alert, and the decision not to open fire was the result of an assessment of the risks associated with the potential fall of missile debris onto populated areas.
The opposition and some military experts have criticized the ministry's actions thus far, demanding a faster response in emergency situations. The Minister of National Defense rejected these allegations, pointing out that the government's priority is to maintain calm and act in accordance with established national security procedures.
This situation demonstrates the significant challenges facing the Polish military in light of the ongoing conflict across the eastern border. The Ministry of National Defense has announced further strengthening of surveillance systems and an analysis of the incident to respond even more effectively to similar violations of Polish airspace in the future.
