Polish minister appeals to Ukraine regarding controversial military unit name

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Polish Minister of National Defense, has addressed the Ukrainian authorities with an important appeal. It concerns the decision to name one of the Ukrainian military units "Heroes of the UPA." The minister expressed deep pain, concern, and opposition regarding this matter, emphasizing the importance of historical memory in the relations between the two countries.

The UPA, or the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, is primarily associated in Poland with the tragic events in Volhynia during World War II. For many Polish families, this name evokes very painful memories. For this reason, the decision by the Ukrainian authorities has sparked strong emotions in Poland and has become a topic of discussion at the highest political level.

During his speech, Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that his request is not intended to humiliate Ukraine. However, the minister believes that building good relations between neighbors requires mutual respect and an understanding of the difficult past. According to him, such actions could negatively impact contemporary Polish-Ukrainian relations, which are currently very close.

Poland is one of Ukraine's most important allies in the face of the ongoing war with Russia. Warsaw regularly provides military, medical, and humanitarian aid. The Polish government emphasizes that while it supports Ukraine in its fight for freedom, it cannot ignore historical issues that are important to Polish society.

The Ministry of National Defense published the minister's speech on social media to reach the widest possible audience. Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed hope for an open dialogue with Kyiv. In his view, only truth and understanding the sensitivity of the other side will allow both nations to build a common, secure future in Europe.
