Key events from the country and the world: politics, court verdicts, and weather warnings
Significant changes are taking place in Polish local and national politics. The Civic Coalition and PSL have announced that Monika Piątkowska will be their joint candidate for the mayor of Kraków. At the same time, Prime Minister Donald Tusk informed that the elections in this city might be postponed until September. The delay results from the need to consider election protests, which is a procedure required by law.
Further important decisions were made in parliament. The Sejm Justice Committee recommended Sławomir Patyra for the position of judge of the Constitutional Tribunal. The candidate received the support of the majority of the committee's deputies. Meanwhile, a high-profile trial regarding a murder on Nowy Świat from 2022 concluded in Warsaw. The main defendant, Dawid Mirkowski, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of a 29-year-old man.
Information about difficult investigations has also appeared in the media. The prosecutor's office had to suspend the case regarding the murder of Sergeant Mateusz Sitek, who died on the border with Belarus. This is due to a lack of cooperation from the Belarusian authorities, who are ignoring the extradition request for the Moroccan suspect. On the other hand, in the case of 17-year-old Łukasz G. from Kadłub, suspected of killing his grandmother and stepfather, investigators have already received the opinion of psychiatric experts, which will allow for further legal steps.
Courts are also dealing with the perpetrators of dangerous road accidents. A court in Wołomin decided on a three-month arrest for a 37-year-old Turkish citizen. The man is suspected of causing a tragic accident in Zielonka near Warsaw, in which two people died. The prosecutor's office is gathering evidence so that the perpetrator is held accountable for causing this tragedy.
On the international stage, a historic event took place in Spain. Pope Leo XIV appeared in the parliament there as the first head of the Catholic Church in history. His speech was received with great enthusiasm, and parliamentarians rewarded him with a seven-minute standing ovation. This event is being widely commented on as a breakthrough moment in diplomatic relations.
Finally, warnings for the residents of Poland. In the town of Jabłonka in Podkarpacie, a dangerous incident occurred – a wolf entered a private yard and approached a 20-month-old child. The authorities are calling for caution. Additionally, the IMGW has issued storm warnings for 14 provinces. Heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and locally also hail are predicted, so it is worth following the weather reports.
