Health misinformation online: Experts warn of the dangers
Internet security experts are sounding the alarm. According to the latest reports, health-related misinformation has ceased to be a niche phenomenon and has become a serious problem affecting broad groups of recipients, including Poles. False information regarding medications, vaccinations, or treatment methods is increasingly appearing in mainstream social media.
The problem is that false content is often prepared in a very professional manner, making it difficult to distinguish from reliable medical knowledge. The authors of such posts use emotional language to attract users' attention and encourage them to share unverified advice. As a result, many patients forgo professional medical care in favor of methods that have no basis in scientific research.
This phenomenon is particularly dangerous in the context of public health. Specialists emphasize that believing in internet myths can lead to delayed diagnoses or improper treatment of serious medical conditions. In Poland, an increasing number of medical organizations are taking up the fight against so-called "fake news" by educating citizens on how to verify sources of information and where to look for reliable health data.
To protect yourself against misinformation, it is worth using only official medical portals and websites run by state institutions, such as the Ministry of Health or the National Health Fund. Experts also remind us that any doubt regarding one's health should be consulted with a doctor, not with anonymous users on internet forums. Digital literacy is a key skill today that directly impacts our safety.
