Important Information: Dispute over Zelensky's Decoration and Candidate for Ombudsman
Poland is facing a serious diplomatic crisis in its relations with Ukraine after the highest state decoration was revoked from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Preparations are also underway in the country to elect a new Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman), for whom the Law and Justice (PiS) party has nominated its candidate.
President Karol Nawrocki revoked the Order of the White Eagle—Poland's oldest and highest state decoration—from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This decision triggered a sharp reaction in Kyiv, with leading Ukrainian politicians beginning to return previously received Polish decorations en masse as a gesture of protest. Prime Minister Donald Tusk assessed this action as a "strategic mistake" from which both countries will lose. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Nawrocki's decision is part of an internal political struggle in Poland and compared the Polish president's actions to the policies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Law and Justice has announced its candidate for the position of Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman). The nominee is Adam Borowski, a democratic opposition activist during the PRL era and head of the Warsaw "Gazeta Polska" club. The Ombudsman is a state official whose task is to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens against unlawful actions by public institutions. This candidacy is stirring emotions, as media reports suggest the candidate is facing a potential prison sentence.
Regarding regional security, discussions about ending the war in Ukraine are still ongoing. Alexander Lukashenko, the leader of Belarus, addressed the possibility of a ceasefire in an interview with Saudi television; however, political sentiment remains divided regarding the chances for peace within the current year.
