Shock - Abuse in the SOS Children's Village

Serious allegations of assault have emerged against Hermann Gmeiner, the founder of SOS Kinderdorf (SOS Children's Villages), causing a major shock in Salzburg. City and state officials have expressed their deep concern and called for swift action and a transparent and comprehensive investigation.

The mayor of Salzburg, Bernard Oehinger from the SPÖ party, said he felt "deeply shocked" after hearing the allegations published by the media. He confirmed that if these accusations are proven true, there is an "urgent need to act," including the possibility of changing the names of streets or buildings named after Gemeiner. Oehinger added that he plans to hold urgent talks with representatives of SOS Children's Villages and with municipalities and local residents, noting that Hermann Gemeiner Street is located on the border between the Maxglan-West district and the municipality of Wals-Siezenheim.

The state government also reacted strongly, with Minister of Social Affairs Wolfgang Föger from the FPÖ party describing the situation as a "massive leadership failure" and questioning the credibility of the organization, especially after the recent statements of Executive Director Annamarie Schlack. Föger said, "Trust has been severely damaged," emphasizing that the organization must now act decisively to restore its credibility.

The background of the case refers to allegations of sexual and physical assaults committed by the founder himself and other individuals associated with the organization. The victims are children and young people who were under the care of SOS Children's Villages, as well as donors and supporters who trusted the organization and contributed to its funding.

Minister Forviger outlined three main demands from the state of Salzburg regarding SOS Children's Villages. First, a sincere and public apology to the victims, donors, and supporters, without excuses or media manipulation. Second, an independent and thorough investigation into all allegations, ensuring transparency and accountability. Finally, a clear timeline for reform that includes a final report and structural measures by the end of 2026. Forviger stated, "Those who want to regain trust must take responsibility," emphasizing that he has already discussed these expectations directly with the organization's management in a meeting he described as "frank and constructive."
