Syrians lead the voluntary return program from Austria with a cash support of 1,000 euros
Official data released by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior revealed that Syrians are the group most benefiting from the voluntary return program in the country. This program is an alternative to the forced deportation of individuals legally required to leave Austria.
Between January 2021 and the end of June 2025, Austria spent about 3.2 million euros of public funds on voluntary return programs, with a large part of this money allocated to support returning Syrians. The program provides direct cash support of 1,000 euros for each returning Syrian, in addition to 200 euros as immediate assistance upon arrival in the country of return.
While the total support can reach up to 4,000 euros, most of this amount consists of non-cash assistance including medical care, psychological support, assistance in reintegration or starting a professional activity, in addition to covering travel costs. These measures aim to ensure a smoother and more sustainable return process.
During the same period, 12,436 cases of voluntary departure were recorded in Austria, with Syrians among the most benefited nationalities. By the end of June 2025 alone, 1,672 new support cases were recorded, with Syrians continuing to lead the beneficiaries.
The Ministry of the Interior confirmed that the program is intended only for individuals legally required to leave Austria. Strict conditions also apply to those convicted of crimes, and each application is subject to individual scrutiny to prevent misuse or repeated benefits, ensuring the program's integrity.
