KBV warns of software errors in medication dosing

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) has issued an important warning for medical practices in Germany. There are technical problems with the software that doctors use to manage their patients. Currently, dangerous errors can occur during the digital transmission of medication information.

The problem occurs when the so-called "uniform nationwide medication plan" (BMP) is imported into a practice's system. This plan is actually intended to help document all of a patient's medications safely and clearly. However, due to errors in the practice management software, dosage information is sometimes transferred incorrectly.

These transmission errors can pose a serious health risk to patients. If the computer system displays the wrong amount of a medication, there is a risk of overdose or an insufficient dose. Correct documentation is vital, especially for people who have to take many different medications at the same time.

The KBV therefore advises all doctors to exercise particular caution when working with digital plans. After importing a medication plan, the data should always be checked manually and compared with the original document. At the moment, one should not rely blindly on the automatic processing by the software.

Software manufacturers are now called upon to fix these technical defects as quickly as possible. Until a solution is found, careful monitoring by medical staff remains the most important protection for patients. Safety in the administration of medication is a top priority in medical care.
