High-security trial in Vienna for seven defendants in a serious abuse case
On Monday, the regional court in Vienna began the trial of seven young defendants in a high-profile case involving the abuse of a 28-year-old teacher, amid tight security measures. More than ten police officers were present to secure the courtroom, which was filled with journalists and legal observers during the opening session.
According to court documents, the teacher was subjected to months of intimidation, exploitation, and violence between July 2024 and January 2025. The individuals involved, known as the 'Leasing Gang', are accused of being between 13 and 17 years old at the time of the alleged crimes. The prosecution states that the group targeted the teacher with threats and extortion, leading to repeated violations of her personal safety and privacy.
Three of the main defendants, aged between 15 and 17, face charges including assault, coercion, and extortion, and they have all denied the allegations against them. This trial comes after another case in Vienna involving a group of minors as well, where most were acquitted, sparking a wide public debate about the juvenile justice system.
The prosecution accuses some defendants of breaking into the victim's apartment and setting it on fire earlier this year while she was away from home. The defendants admitted to theft but denied any involvement in the fire. Estimates indicate that the material losses resulting from the fire amounted to several thousand euros.
A psychological report submitted to the court showed that the teacher is still suffering from long-term psychological effects as a result of the events. Her lawyer requested the court to hold some sessions in private to protect her privacy and safety. The trial is expected to last several days, with a verdict expected later this month.
