Warning of Software Errors: Incorrect Dosages Possible in Medical Practices

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) has issued an important warning for medical practices in Germany. There are technical problems with the software that doctors use to manage their patients. These errors can lead to information about medication dosages being incorrectly transferred into the system.

At the center of the problem is the so-called nationwide uniform medication plan (BMP). This document lists all medications that a patient must take. When a doctor scans this plan or reads it into their computer system, the data should actually be stored automatically and correctly. However, transmission errors are currently occurring during this digital process.

The KBV explains that these software errors can result in incorrect quantity specifications. This means that a different dose could be recorded in the computer than on the original paper plan. If this error is not noticed in time, there is a risk that patients will take their medication incorrectly. This poses a significant risk to the health of those affected.

For this reason, the KBV asks all medical professionals for special attention. Doctors and their staff should always manually compare the data in the computer system with the printed medication plan. At the moment, one cannot rely on technology alone. The manufacturers of the practice software have already been informed so that they can resolve the technical problems as quickly as possible.

This incident shows that while digitalization in healthcare offers many advantages, it also brings new risks. Human control remains indispensable to guarantee patient safety. Patients who are unsure about their medication should check again carefully with their doctor's office or pharmacy.
