Failure in negotiations regarding the Salary Law: Romania risks losing 770 million euros from the PNRR
Negotiations between the main political parties in Romania – PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR – regarding the new Salary Law have ended without a concrete result. The discussions focused on reforming the public sector salary system, an essential step for fulfilling the commitments assumed by our country through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
Capital Mayor Nicușor Dan drew attention to the serious consequences of this political deadlock. He stated that the parties involved are taking responsibility for the loss of 770 million euros, a sum that represents an important milestone within the PNRR. These European funds were intended for investments and reforms necessary for Romania's development.
The lack of consensus between the governing parties and the opposition puts the schedule established with the European Commission at risk. Reforms regarding public sector salaries are closely monitored by European officials, and failure to meet deadlines could lead to the suspension of funding tranches, thus affecting the state budget in the long term.
Currently, the situation remains uncertain, and citizens are waiting for clarifications from political leaders. It remains to be seen whether a compromise solution will be found in the coming period to avoid the loss of European funds and to unblock the administrative reform process.
