The electronic identity card will take over the functions of the health card in Romania
The Romanian authorities have announced an important change for citizens: the new electronic identity card (CEI) will be able to take over the function of the national health card. This measure is part of a broader plan to digitize public services, aimed at simplifying the interaction between Romanians and state institutions.
Currently, Romanians must carry both their ID card and their health card to benefit from medical services. By integrating these two documents into a single digital medium, citizens will need only one document to identify themselves and to access the public health system.
The implementation of this project depends on the development of a new technical infrastructure at the national level. Specialists are already working on the necessary IT systems so that medical data can be read and verified directly through the new identity card, while ensuring the security of personal information.
For now, the current health cards remain valid and must continue to be kept. The authorities will provide more details about the timeline of this transition as the infrastructure is finalized and tested under real conditions.
This initiative represents a step forward in the modernization of the administration in Romania. The final objective is to reduce bureaucracy and offer faster and more efficient access to essential services for all citizens.
