Increase in the number of West Nile virus infection cases in Romania

Health authorities in Romania have recently reported an increase in the number of West Nile virus infection cases. To date, 83 cases of the illness have been confirmed nationwide, a situation that has drawn the attention of public health specialists.

Unfortunately, the death toll has reached five. Representatives of the medical system stated that the victims were elderly individuals who were already suffering from various chronic conditions, known as comorbidities. These pre-existing health issues made their bodies more vulnerable to the virus.

The West Nile virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Specialists emphasize that the risk of transmission is higher during warm periods, when the activity of these insects is intense. The recently reported cases have been identified across different age groups, starting from adolescents over 15 years old.

To protect themselves, citizens are advised to take precautionary measures, such as using insect repellent substances and wearing long-sleeved clothing in areas with dense vegetation. It is also recommended to install protective screens on windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes.

Authorities continue to monitor the epidemiological situation in the country and recommend seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, or confusion occur. Proper information and prevention remain the most effective methods to limit the spread of this virus.
