Romania's IT Sector: High productivity, but major challenges in innovation
The IT&C sector has become one of the main pillars of the Romanian economy, generating approximately 14% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). According to a recent study, labor productivity in this field is 16% higher than the national average, demonstrating the high efficiency of technology employees.
However, these optimistic economic figures are accompanied by a less favorable reality regarding long-term development. Romania currently ranks last in the European Union in terms of innovation, an essential indicator for a country's competitiveness in the global market.
Experts point out that, although Romania attracts numerous investments and has highly trained specialists, there is a discrepancy between the ability to provide quality services and the ability to create proprietary innovative products. This situation limits the growth potential of local companies internationally.
To change this position in European rankings, closer collaboration between the private sector, academia, and authorities is needed. Investments in research and development could help Romania transition from the role of a service provider to that of a creator of new technologies.
In conclusion, the IT industry remains a vital engine for Romania, but the future of this sector depends on the country's ability to invest more in innovation. Bridging this gap with the rest of the EU member states is the necessary step to ensure sustainable economic development in the years to come.
