Romania invests hundreds of millions of euros in military technology, but local firms are missing from European programs
Romania has already begun allocating significant sums of money for the modernization of its defense capabilities. Through the European SAFE program, our country has contracted or is preparing projects worth hundreds of millions of euros, aimed at the acquisition of drones and advanced munitions, which are essential for national security in the current context.
However, there is a major issue regarding the involvement of the local industry. Although the Romanian state is investing considerable budgets, no Romanian company has managed, to date, to be included in the European defense accelerator. This situation raises questions regarding the ability of domestic firms to access the technology and funding offered at the European Union level.
A Romanian entrepreneur has drawn attention to this imbalance, proposing solutions to change the situation. He argues that a clearer strategy is needed to support local companies in becoming competitive and being able to participate in international military technology development projects. Without this support, Romania risks remaining just a buyer of foreign technology, instead of becoming an active producer on the European market.
In conclusion, the challenge for Romania in the coming period is to balance the urgent need for modern equipment with the development of its own defense industry. Success in this field could bring not only economic benefits but also greater technological independence for the country within European partnerships.
