Staffing crisis in the Romanian medical system: Positions remain frozen
The public health system in Romania is facing a major challenge after hospital hiring was restricted starting in 2023. This measure has led to a significant staff shortage, affecting the ability of healthcare units to provide complete medical services to patients.
Currently, the only way for hospitals to open positions for competition is through the approval of a government memorandum. This procedure is considered by industry representatives to be difficult and time-consuming, which hinders the recruitment process for the doctors and nurses needed in understaffed departments.
The deadlock arose in the context of the authorities' efforts to reduce budget expenditures. However, the lack of personnel puts additional pressure on the doctors already working in the system, as they are forced to take on an increasing number of tasks to cover the needs of patients in state hospitals.
The situation remains uncertain for the near future, while discussions about unfreezing positions continue at the Ministry of Health level. Patients and medical staff are waiting for quick solutions to ensure the optimal functioning of the Romanian healthcare system.
