Change of command for NATO air policing mission in Romania
The Italian Air Force has officially concluded its enhanced air policing mission, conducted over the last few months at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania. This mission served to strengthen the security of the North Atlantic Alliance's airspace in the Black Sea region.
As part of this transfer of responsibility, the Spanish Air Force will take over the mission of monitoring and protecting Romanian skies. The Spanish military personnel will continue patrol and rapid intervention activities, ensuring the continuity of NATO commitments in our country.
Air policing missions are essential for maintaining stability on NATO's eastern flank. They allow allies to collaborate closely and respond rapidly to any challenges that might arise in the airspace of member states.
The presence of allied forces in Romania demonstrates the solidarity between the Alliance's member states. Through the rotation of troops and aircraft, NATO maintains its collective defense capability and the ability to deter any threat to regional security.
