The evolution of Metro's IT division under Wipro's leadership: Declining business in 2025
The company that took over the former IT division of the Metro giant, now under the control of the Indian group Wipro, reported modest financial results for 2025. The entity's turnover fell to 75.1 million lei, marking the lowest level recorded in the last 14 years for this business unit.
This change comes after Metro's IT operations were acquired by Wipro, one of the largest technology service providers globally. The transaction was part of a broader strategy by the retailer Metro to outsource technology services in order to focus on its core retail business.
The decline in revenue reflects the challenges faced by the IT sector in Romania in the current market context. Although the company went through an integration process within the Indian group, the figures show a difficult adjustment period, which led to the weakest financial performance in the last decade and a half.
Currently, analysts are closely watching how Wipro will manage this division on the local market. It remains to be seen whether restructuring measures or new development strategies will succeed in turning the business around in the coming years, given the importance of the IT services sector to the Romanian economy.
