The electronic identity card will be usable in the healthcare system starting in 2026
Starting September 1, 2026, Romanian citizens will be able to use the electronic identity card to access medical services. This change is part of a broader process of digitizing public administration in Romania, aimed at simplifying the interaction between patients and the social health insurance system.
The new identity card will take over the functions of the national health card. As a result, patients will no longer need to carry two different documents with them, but will be able to identify themselves at the doctor's office or pharmacy using only the new electronic identity document. This measure is intended to reduce bureaucracy and facilitate quick access to medical services.
However, the implementation of this project faces significant technical challenges. Currently, medical offices and pharmacies do not possess readers compatible with the new electronic identity cards. The National Health Insurance House (CNAS) must find solutions to equip healthcare facilities with the necessary equipment before the established deadline.
Authorities must ensure that the IT infrastructure is prepared to handle this large volume of data securely. Additionally, doctors and auxiliary staff will need training to use the new technologies in their daily work.
In conclusion, the transition toward using the electronic identity card in healthcare represents an important step for the modernization of the system in Romania. The success of this initiative, however, depends on the collaboration between state institutions and medical service providers to ensure a smooth transition for all patients.
