Romania is facing an unusual situation in the field of heart transplants

The medical system in Romania is currently facing an unexpected challenge regarding heart transplants. Although Romanian doctors have the technical capacity and necessary resources to perform these life-saving interventions, the number of patients receiving an organ is much lower than the number of available donors.

Professor Horațiu Moldovan, a recognized specialist in the field, explained that this discrepancy leads to a paradoxical situation. When compatible hearts become available for transplant, doctors cannot find enough patients who are prepared or eligible to benefit from them in a timely manner. This logistical and medical problem limits the efficiency of the national transplant program.

Due to this imbalance, Romania has reached the point of exporting available organs to other European countries. This measure is necessary so that the hearts are not wasted and can be used to save patients in other states, where waiting lists are much longer and better organized.

Specialists emphasize that, to improve this situation, there is a need for better identification of patients who need transplants and an optimization of processes within clinics. By comparison, other European states manage to perform a much higher number of interventions relative to their population, by efficiently utilizing the network of specialized clinics.

In conclusion, Romania's current challenge is no longer just the lack of donors, but the efficient management of existing resources. Medical authorities are looking for solutions to increase the number of patients who can benefit from these interventions, so that available hearts can be used with priority for Romanian citizens.
