Oncology drug crisis in Romania: Authorities seek solutions for patients

The Federation of Cancer Patient Associations in Romania has sounded the alarm through an open letter addressed to health authorities. Patient representatives announced that the medical system is facing a severe shortage of essential drugs for oncological treatment, which endangers the lives of many people suffering from cancer.

According to data provided by the association, three types of cytostatics necessary for basic treatment are completely missing from pharmacies and hospitals. Furthermore, eight other drugs are available only in insufficient quantities, forcing doctors to seek alternatives or postpone chemotherapy sessions for patients who depend on these therapeutic regimens.

This situation creates immense pressure on both patients and medical staff, who find themselves unable to follow standard treatment protocols. The lack of medication is mainly caused by supply chain issues at the distributor level and low prices that make certain products no longer profitable for manufacturers.

The Ministry of Health has announced that it is analyzing the situation and seeking urgent solutions to unblock the necessary stocks. Among the measures being discussed are facilitating the parallel import of medicines and negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to ensure the continuity of treatments for cancer patients in the country.

In conclusion, resolving this crisis remains a priority for the Romanian healthcare system. Patients and their families are waiting for concrete and rapid measures, so that no person diagnosed with cancer is forced to interrupt treatment due to a lack of vital medication.
