Over 3 million drivers in Romania are driving without mandatory RCA insurance

A serious problem is affecting road safety in Romania: over 3 million drivers are currently driving without valid RCA insurance. Although the law requires all vehicle owners to hold this policy, statistics show that a quarter of the cars registered in the country are uninsured, which poses a major risk to all road users.

Authorities have recently discovered cases in which insurance brokers issued fake policies to obtain quick cash. During investigations, some brokers admitted that they resorted to these illegal practices due to personal financial difficulties and debts accumulated at banks. This situation has created confusion and financial losses for many drivers who believed they were covered in the event of an accident.

The Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) reacted immediately to these irregularities. The institution announced that it will intensify checks to identify fake policies and sanction brokers who break the law. Furthermore, the ASF recommends that drivers always check the validity of their insurance on official websites to ensure that the documents received are authentic.

Driving without valid RCA insurance can lead to hefty fines and the retention of the registration certificate. Moreover, in the event of a road accident, the at-fault driver who does not have insurance is required to pay for all damages caused out of pocket, sums which can be extremely high.

To avoid legal and financial problems, authorities advise drivers to buy policies only from authorized companies and to avoid offers that seem suspiciously cheap. Road safety remains a shared responsibility, and compliance with the law is essential for protecting all road users.
