Romatsa accounts frozen & social media rules

Today's briefing focuses on the freezing of the Romatsa air traffic service accounts, possible European restrictions for young people on social media, and the labor market situation. We also present the ranking of top schools and a national security measure.

The bank accounts of Romatsa, the state-owned enterprise holding a monopoly on air traffic services in Romania, have been frozen through a garnishment (a legal procedure to freeze funds) at the request of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. The measure was implemented by a bailiff as part of a lawsuit, and authorities are set to announce the necessary measures to ensure flight continuity.

While authorities manage this crisis, another major change is being prepared at the European level for families: children could have restricted access to social media. The European Commission is set to present a plan that would impose age limits and strict verification rules for digital platforms in all member states, including Romania.

In addition to digital regulations, new economic statistics show increased pressure on the labor market, with Romania's unemployment rate reaching 6.4% in May. This figure places the country above the European average, with an increase recorded especially among young people who are unable to find a job.

In contrast to the unemployment figures, school performance remains high in certain institutions, according to the results for the 2026 National Evaluation. The "Andrei Șaguna" College in Brașov and "Gheorghe Lazăr" in Bucharest lead the national top 20 schools in the country, based on the average grades obtained by graduates.

Beyond educational rankings, public safety was marked by an intervention by the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), which led to the emergency expulsion of a Moroccan citizen. The man, who moved to Romania in 2023, was detained before he could carry out suspicious activities, having been monitored by authorities for security risks.
